The View from Orion

As I watched the Artemis II launch yesterday, a specific moment took my breath away: the video feed from the Orion spacecraft, looking back at our fragile, beautiful Earth. In that single, silent frame, the magnitude of it all finally hit me.

For over twenty years, my life has been inextricably woven into the fabric of this mission. I have followed the trail of this incredible machine across the country—streaming booster tests in the deserts of Utah, parachute drops in Arizona, the raw power of engine tests in Mississippi, friction stir welding in Louisiana, and shell buckle tests in Alabama. Yesterday, two decades of relentless testing, hardware assembly, and human dedication culminated in one monumental leap into the cosmos.

I am profoundly proud to work alongside this NASA team. Together, we built, rehearsed, and perfected a video streaming stack invented exclusively for this moment.

To some, it might just sound like a list of equipment: encoders, decoders, transcoders, video and audio optimizers, stream analysis hardware, bandwidth monitors, routers, switchers, and standards converters. But to us, this hardware is the vital link connecting humanity to space. We tested and optimized every single component in perfect harmony, ensuring that millions of viewers around the globe could share in this historic journey with the best possible clarity.

Note: We are already getting word that the launch viewership is shattering streaming records across multiple platforms!

Even as I write this, our teams aren't resting. We are actively pushing the boundaries further, working to bring back even higher-quality video by utilizing laser communication data streams. Yes—we are using lasers to beam data at the speed of light from the depths of space back to Earth. This is the kind of "crazy cool" reality I get to live every single day. One moment, we are innovating ways to improve the awe-inspiring visuals we share with the public. The next moment, we are passionately debating which spacecraft are faster: the ones from Star Wars, the ones from Star Trek, or—as I constantly remind the room—Serenity from Firefly.

Every day is an adventure. Every day pushes the limits of new technology. Every day inspires me to do better.

But most of all, every day is an absolute blessing.
